Electro-acupuncture is the application of an electrical current to acupuncture needles to stimulate healing within the body. Acupuncture points have demonstrated increased electrical conductivity and decreased electrical resistance. Needling, or even touching known points, produces a small electrical effect known as piezo, within the body´s connective tissue.
The strength of needling can be augmented by applying a weak current of electricity to the needles. The strength of the electric current varies depending on the desired result of the procedure. The electro-acupuncture device delivers about 10-80 milliamps depending upon the selected setting. Patients may experience a tingling sensation while being treated with electro-acupuncture, which is due to the current. The average treatment length with electro-acupuncture is 10-20 minutes.
